A Celebration of Spring

Happy Easter! For myself, and many others out there who do not celebrate traditional Easter, it's really just another Sunday. Today is actually my Saturday and my Sunday which stinks but hey, sometimes it happens. To make the most of it I enjoyed an amazing meal out last night with wonderfrul friends and finished it off with a special treat - old school custard! Which I had never had, holy cow it's like vanilla clouds in your mouth. I also treated myself to a cute lil Easter present (!!!) and some beautiful flowers from the Market. The flowers are in full force at work and it really helps me to keep balance and sanity in my day. Spring is really showing off - it started off rough with snow the second day in but now the temperature is consistently pleasant, the sun has been radiating and the mountain views have been gorgeously clear. Thus, I declare today my Celebration of Spring!

I'm making some yummy Sunday morning tea and enjoying my Ode to Spring windowsill. The glitter skull lives on this windowsill and I was going to remove it from the picture but then I realized, it's actually pretty fitting for Easter haha.

A few posts ago I shared a brief video that was so universally beautiful, breathtaking really, and several ideas strongly hit within me. I have been trying to be mindful of these ideas each day. A piece of transcript form the video, "You think this is just another day in your life. It's not just another day. It's the one day that is given to you today. It's given to you. It is a gift. It is the only gift that you have right now, and the only appropriate response is gratefulness. If you do nothing else but to cultivate that response, to the great gift that this unique day is, if you learn to respond as if it was the first day in you life and the very last day then you will have spent this day very well. Begin by opening your eyes and be surprised that you have eyes you can  open. That incredible array of colors that is constantly offered to us for pure enjoyment."
I used to really dislike the saying, "live everyday like its your last" which is more or less the message here. I guess I had always associated it as an excuse to make a poor decision; there's a million stories of someone acting like a total idiot, saying "yolo!" I'm all for spontaneity, but you can't spend every day in total lunacy. Life is hard. For many like myself, it can be difficult to see good in this world and carry a strong light day by day. But hearing this narration allowed me to see this idea from another perspective and rework that saying into one that say's if you can find nothing else to enjoy in your day, look to the little things and then you will remember there is goodness in this world. Again, if you haven't seen this short video, I insist!
Enjoy this day, whatever you are doing!

A Lesson in Reed Making

While I was in Arizona I got to help my friend while she made some of her reeds. Technically I helped process the cane while she shaped it, and that was only the first stage! Even though I wasn't very good at it, the process was really neat so I felt compelled to document it. The photo above is only a half finished reed but you can see its begun to take shape.

Arizona! And Some Geometric Shapes

I recently had a short jaunt down to visit my bff in Pheonix, Arizona. The trip, although too short, was awesome! I love that she gave me a tour of her campus, not only because there is some awesome flw-ness going on but because the campus was totally inspiring!

ASU Gammage, the building in these first 4 images, is a performance hall and one of the final designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. Below is what I am calling the cake building, and the adjacent Art Museum. I was giddy photographing all of the geometric shapes, patterns and angles that played with and off of the buildings.

I took sooo many cacti photographs! The landscaping in Az follows a general theme and I have to say I quite like all the simple rock & cacti designs. I was originally just playing with the shadows from the cactus flower but then I noticed the gorgeous coloring - rose, sage, yellow, blues and purples all meshed together like a living watercolor.
I found these two palettes that have some of my cactus hues, actually they are basically the same palettes but different shades. I have a lot of these colors already in my house...but then I also think I have a lot of every color in my house. On a side note, I love design seeds - if you want to get lost in color for an hour, browse their website!

What I Wore: Soft Spring

If I worked in an office, I would dress like this more often. This outfit is super comfortable but also a little bit formal, that must come from the pleating. The color of this shirt spoke to me and said,  "Rhinestones. Lots and lots of rhinestones."  I never disagree with mysterious rhinestone voices.
The color of this top is one of my favorites for Spring, it's sort of a mint, sort of aquamarine...? All I know is that when I thirfted it (1.99!!) I also got a similar top in coral and I'm in LOVE with both colors, which I hope to collect more of soon!

This is another pair of pants that I've had in the back of the closet for several years and I finally finally took the tag off, yay! I'm pretty sure 'grey linen wide leg sailor pants' is all kinds of oxymoronic but I love them and I can't believe I waited this long to wear them, they are sooo comfy!

It occurred to me once I was dressed that I don't really have the 'appropriate' shoes to wear with this outfit and then I realized that even if I could have any shoe in the world I don't actually know what type of shoe to wear with this type of pant! Suggestions? I was thinking a wedge for the summer! Meanwhile, cheetah flats will just have to work.

Friday Findings : A Collection of Random

This looks like a planetary diagram for science class, not an edible organism - A Hala fruit
Trinity Church, Russian Orthodox in Antartica
Awesome shark graffiti!
I've watched this video a few times now, it's worth watching at least once. Time lapse photography + inspirational life insights.

Even without the backstory I fell in LOVE with this photograph by Jonas Bendikson. 'Villagers collecting scrap from a crashed spacecraft, surrounded by thousands of white butterflies'
I fell in love with this German tradition after seeing a beautiful, delicate, sparkling egg tree in a story book. This famous family tree holds 10,000 eggs!
And just because why not - it's James Franco.

A Fierce Thrift Find

Another quick and cold beach excursion. I always want to take a little walk and I always think I want to do that on the beach. But it's always so windy and for some reason I keep going, totally in denial that yes, it will be windy.

I couldn't believe it when I pulled out this sweater, I didn't even care that it wasn't the right tag color! I thrifted this sweater coat...long sweater? sweater jacket?....for about 12$ which still was a really good deal for me.When I thrift I like to give myself a specific goal and budget, and always keep a keen eye on the tag color of the day items (you know, green tags are 50% off today). However I will make exceptions when something so awesome speaks to me, I just, I have no will.
Running action shot yay! This happens to be the best picture of the actual design..skully caterpillar butterfly, um yes, but my favorite thing is really the colors - all of them! Reds, oranges, blues and violets plus all this cool pops of yellows and fucsias. It makes me feel fierce! Like my cheeetahhhh loafers!
What makes you feel FIERCE?!
